Today I am thankful for the grocery store.
I know that sounds odd. It is. But I was at the grocery store tonight. And I'm standing there in the middle of one of the aisles and it occured to me that it is an amazing thing. We have these stores and sometimes mega stores that have thousands of options. Thousands of readily available food stuffs. No effort really required on our part. Give them some cash and they'll give you the foods that you need to sustain yourself. And even some foods no one needs at all.
And in other countries, they sit and wait for the relief deliveries to provide nothing but rice. And for that THEY are thankful.

My husband's best friend came to visit this weekend. The Manawa Ice Fishing Derby was the main event. We spent a fun albeit cold morning on the ice. Rex won an ice tent. Jim missed winning an ice tent by a small fish that was really a big fish story. And fun was had by all. Most of all, we got to spend time talking and laughing. And seeing the grin on Jim's face at having his friend to visit was worth more than anything.

Today I am thankful for text messages at 12:31 am.
My kids can text me in the middle of the night and that little beep won't wake me up. But in the morning I wake to neat little messages from them. Like last night's. "Dilated to 13 cm." Pretty sure he met 3 cm. LOL Baby coming soon!

Today I am thankful for good friends that will eat sushi with me .
We had a lovely evening of sushi, laughing, and sake bombs. Wait. That was just me. I had the sake bombs. They had some normal thing like margaritas and diet cokes. And sushi was loved by all. Long live the volcano roll!

Today I am thankful for Chinese food.
OK, not really for the food itself, or even the fact that it was some semblance of what passes as Chinese in a South Omaha restaurant kind of way. I'm thankful that my husband called and said, "Hey, do you want to have Chinese food for lunch?" And then he came and picked me up. And we went for Chinese. We got to talk. We got to be alone. If only for 20 minutes. But it was just us. No pretense. No expectations. Just lunch.
And that is what we needed.
For this blessing, I am grateful and indebted.

Today I am thankful for working on a Saturday.
Work on the weekends makes me grateful how? I mean who in their right mind is GLAD to be at work on a day they are supposed to be off?
It's quiet. There are no phones ringing. There are no people coming unannounced to the front desk that need me. There are no appointments that take me 20 minutes to get back on track after.
There is only me, my work, and the quiet.
For this blessing, I am grateful and indebted.

Today I am thankful for that Amber is just learning to cook.
She was never much interested in learning how to make anything beyond what came in a box and the occasional green bean casserole. Now that she is on her own and tired of what comes in boxes and cans, she is endeavoring into recipes. And every few days I get these calls that start with, "I wanted to make [insert entree here], do you know the recipe?" or "I started to make [insert recipe here] and I need to know what [cooking term] means?" The problems often involve a microwave that really sounds like it needs replaced or an ingredient that she doesn't have. But they always involve a phone call. And that is an opportunity I will NEVER turn down.
For this blessing, I am grateful and indebted.

Today I am thankful for hope.
This week is the one year anniversary of the recovery of Shawn Hornbeck and Ben Ownby. And that was the day my hope was restored. And it is what I turn to when the hope begins to fade.

I was going to say that I was thankful for caffeine but that sounded really dumb. Even though it is what I am running on right now. Instead, I am thankful for a good night's sleep. I know they exist. I've had them. Just not last night. I look forward to another in my near future.

Today, I am thankful for sympathy.
I received a sympathy card today from a friend. My grandfather's death a week ago has brought a very mixed emotions week. Just when I think I am OK, I realize that I am not. But the sympathy card was just what I needed this morning.
